• Kindergarten Applications for 2023-2024 School Year Begin

  Dear Families,

  Beginning next Wednesday December 7^th, 2022 families with children born in 2018 will be able to apply to attend Kindergarten for the 2023-24 school year. 

  How to Apply

  When the application period is open:

  1. Choose up to 12 schools that you’d like your child to attend.
  2. Add these programs to their kindergarten application.
  3. Order these school choices in the application in your order of preference, with your favorite school at the top as #1. 

  Your child will get an offer to your highest possible choice considering the factors discussed in the “Learn How Students Get Offers” section above.

  Please note:

  • Some elementary schools also offer Dual Language program or programs. To apply to a Dual Language program, add it to your child’s application. 
  • If you’d like your child to attend your zoned school, be sure to add it to your application; however, you don’t have to place it as your first choice. 
  • Submit only one application per child. 

  You can submit your kindergarten application one of two ways:

  • Online with MySchools(Open external link) in English, Spanish, Chinese, Bengali, Russian, Arabic, Urdu, Haitian Creole, Korean, or French. We’ll let you know when the application opens and you can apply online!
  • By phone at 718-935-2009. If you are applying by phone, interpretation services are available in more than 200 languages.

  Kindergarten admissions is not first come, first served—all applications submitted online, by phone, or in person by the deadline will be treated the same based on admissions priorities.

• Notification of COVID-19 Cases

  Dear P.S. 064 Joseph P. Addabbo at 82-01 101 AVENUE community,

  I am writing to notify you that members of our school community have tested positive for COVID-19 and may have exposed others while at school.

  Below you will find guidance on next steps that will help keep our school community healthy and safe. The information below reflects the expertise of the Department of Health & Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), Test & Trace Corp (T2), and the New York City Department of Education (DOE).

  Note: DOHMH has issued new guidance due to the current transmission level of COVID. All people, regardless of vaccination status are strongly encouraged to wear masks at all times when indoors in a public setting. Please see the DOHMH advisory for more information.

  What Happens Now?

  • Students and staff who shared classroom space with the individual who tested positive will receive at-home tests with guidance and directions. All may continue to attend school as long as they test negative for COVID and have no COVID like symptoms.
  • The Situation Room will monitor our school for any further interventions.
  • Anyone with a positive COVID-19 test will not return to the school until they are no longer infectious. 
  • If your child is feeling sick, keep them at home.

   

  How do we stay healthy? 

  We strongly encourage the COVID-19 vaccination for all age-eligible students. Find a vaccine site today at https://vaccinefinder.nyc.gov/. There is no cost to be vaccinated.

  Vaccine booster shots are now available for all fully vaccinated New Yorkers 5 years and older. These shots boost your immunity from an initial vaccination series. A booster shot is recommended for any adult who received the second dose of the Pfizer vaccine at least five months ago, the second dose of the Moderna vaccine at least six months ago, or the one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine at least two months ago.

  Please remember to follow these important actions to prevent COVID-19 transmission:   

  1. Stay home if sick (except to get essential medical care, including COVID-19 testing).
  2. Wear a face covering if you are symptomatic or exposed to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
  3. Practice healthy hand hygiene: Wash your hands often or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer; avoid touching your face; and cover your cough or sneeze with your arm, not your hands.

• Cell Phone Policy

  SCHOOL-BASED POLICY FOR USE OF CELL PHONES, COMPUTING DEVICES, AND PORTABLE MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEMS ON SCHOOL PROPERTY

  October 2022

  Students are permitted to bring the following electronic devices into the school building:

  1) cell phones, 2) laptops, 3) tablets, iPads, and other similar computing devices; and 4) portable music and entertainment systems.

  A. Use of Electronic Devices

  1. During School Day and After-School Programs

  • Electronic devices are not allowed to be used or turned on at any time on school property during the school day or on school trips, unless under the direction/supervision of school staff.
  • Electronic devices are not allowed to be used or turned on at any time on school property during after-school programs, unless under the direction/supervision of school staff.

  1. During State Tests and Practice Tests
     • Electronic devices will not be allowed in the classroom during the administration of a state exam including practice tests.  It is suggested that students leave devices at home on the testing days to facilitate the testing process.
     • Electronic devices will be collected and stored at the school.   Devices will be returned to the student at the conclusion of the state examination or practice test at the end of each testing day.
  2. During School Field Trips
     • Electronic devices are not allowed to be used or turned on at any time during school supervised field trips unless authorized by supervising teachers.   

  B. Confiscation

  Electronic devices may be subject to confiscation by a school administrator or staff member.  Method of return of confiscated devices will be determined on a case by case basis.  Where appropriate, measures will be instituted in a progressive fashion, which may include:

  • Warning to student to end the use of the electronic device and put it away.
  • Confiscation of the electronic device and return to student at end of school day.
  • Confiscation of device from student and return to parent/guardian following parent conference.
  • Confiscation of device from student and return to parent following student entering into behavioral contract.
  • Revocation of privilege for student to bring device to school.

  C. Discipline

  Students who use any electronic device in violation of any provision of the DOE’s Discipline Code, the school’s policy, Chancellor’s Regulation A-413, and/or the DOE’s Internet Acceptable Use and Safety Policy will be subject to discipline in accordance with the guidance interventions and disciplinary responses set forth in the Discipline Code.

  D. Lost / Stolen Electronic Devices

  Students are responsible for their electronic devices and should take measures to ensure that their devices are safely stored away in their backpack or pocket.

• Emergency Readiness

  Dear Parents,

  I am writing to provide you with information about the Department of Education's Emergency Readiness Initiatives that are in place in all NYC Public Schools.

  Every school currently has procedures for emergencies.  In 2000, New York State Education Law Section 2801 was enacted requiring schools to develop safety plans regarding emergency response. In July of 2001, the law was amended to require that plans include information for evacuation and sheltering. In accordance with this, "schools need to conduct drills and other exercises to test components of the emergency response plan."

  School staff members are trained in various procedures that are outlined in the School Safety Plan and we currently conduct a variety of drills throughout the year to prepare our staff and students. Section 807 of the New York State Education Law requires all schools to conduct a minimum of 12 emergency drills each year. Section 917 of the State Education Law states that schools are required to provide and maintain automated external defibrillator (AED) equipment, and drills are conducted during the year to assess the use of AED units in an emergency. In accordance with Section 3623 of the State Education Law, drills are also conducted at schools that focus on safety on a school bus.

  In addition to conducting these types of drills, our school has a Building Response Team that is trained to activate and respond to different incidents that may occur at our school. Under the new General Response Protocol (GRP), every school will be conducting specific drills designed to help prepare all school communities for three different types of response to emergencies that may occur: evacuation, shelter-in, and lockdown. Opportunities for parent engagement are available at our school to ensure that families are involved in our school-based emergency readiness program. Parent versions of the School Safety Plan are available upon request in the main office, and information explaining the GRP is included with this letter.   Emergency readiness training in schools takes place in September and continues for staff and students throughout the school year. Student training is grade appropriate and designed to ensure that students understand the importance of these drills without causing unnecessary alarm. Please review the General Response Protocols that have been given to all students, and discuss these procedures with your child.

  All families are reminded to update the Emergency Contact Cards (Blue Cards) that are on file in our main office. This includes providing and updating information indicating phone numbers, and the names of adults to whom the school may release children in an emergency. Families are also encouraged to register with Notify NYC (https://a858-nycnotifv.nyc.gov/notifynyc/) to receive information about emergency events, and call 311for additional information about a school during an emergency.

  Welcome to the 2022–2023 school year!

  As the father of four children, I still remember the excitement of September and my kids’ jitters over what the new school year would bring. Would they like their teachers? Would it be easy to make new friends? Would they do well in their classes? I reassured them that the adults in their school would cherish them as much as I did at home.

  Now, as I prepare to experience my first “first day of school” as Chancellor, I am grateful for you and for our educators, who are as excited as I am to welcome your children back. I also appreciate that in sending your children into our classrooms, you are placing great trust in us—trust that we will challenge your children intellectually so they can live out their wildest dreams. Trust that we will keep them safe and help them grow as human beings. Trust that they will graduate with a pathway to a rewarding career and enjoy long-term economic security. Trust that we will teach your children how to be a positive force for change in our world.

  I am committed to doing all of this—and more.

  My team and I have spent the summer reimagining the student experience so that it better serves your children. Literacy, which is the foundational building block of all learning, will be a major focus this school year. We are transforming how we teach reading by implementing a high-quality, phonics-based literacy program in all elementary schools. We are extending learning beyond the four walls of the classroom, offering students regular visits to local museums, parks, and all the incredible resources our great city has to offer. At the same time, we are improving students’ digital learning experiences.

  This year, we are also offering more of the learning opportunities you have requested, enhancing the way we serve all children. This includes an increase in Community Schools, Gifted & Talented programs, bilingual education programs, and programs to improve long-term academic outcomes for students with disabilities. Wellness and its role in student success is another priority you’ll be hearing more about.

  I can’t write to families without recognizing you as the lifeblood of our school communities and our true partners in your child’s education. Be on the lookout for improved ways to access the information and support you need to help your children succeed. This will include expanded language access supports for families who speak languages other than English and more opportunities for us to work together.

I know that there have been challenges, and I hope you agree that our schools stand ready to put all children on the path to the bright, bold futures they deserve.   Get Ready for the First Day of School!

  Here’s what to do before September 8, 2022

   Get a physical exam.
  Is your child starting school or child care for the first time? Before school starts, make sure your child
  receives a complete physical exam from a health care provider, documented by the Child and
  Adolescent Health Examination Form (CH205). This form is available for download at
  schools.nyc.gov/schoolhealth.

   Get required immunizations.
  New York State Public Health Law requires students to get certain vaccines in order to attend child
  care or school. Before the school year begins, your child should receive all required immunizations.
  You can find more information about required immunizations at schools.nyc.gov/immunization. We
  also recommend that all New Yorkers stay up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccines, including boosters for
  those eligible. Visit vaccinefinder.nyc.gov or call 877-829-4692 to find a location near you.

   Mask up.
  Students are strongly encouraged to wear a well-fitting mask on school buses and in crowded indoor
  settings, regardless of vaccination status. Masks are required under certain circumstances, such as
  visiting the school nurse’s office or medical room or if exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 at school.
  Stock up on masks for your children to wear! Visit schools.nyc.gov/covid19 for more information on
  health and safety policies regarding COVID-19 in schools.

   Get tested.
  We encourage students to test at home for COVID-19 infection the day before the first day of school
  using a home test kit or PCR test administered by a health provider to help protect their school
  community against the spread of the virus.
  Get Ready for the First Day of School!

   Update your contact information.
  You can make updates online in your NYC Schools Account (NYCSA), or you can complete the
  emergency contact form provided by your school. If you do not yet have an NYC Schools Account,
  visit schools.nyc.gov/NYCSA to learn how to sign up.

   Set a standard bedtime and morning routine before the first day of school.
  Start now to get your children on a regular sleep schedule. Then, a few days before school starts,
  practice your family’s expected morning routine, including getting ready, eating breakfast, and heading
  out the door to your bus stop or subway station in order to arrive at school on time.

   Meet your school’s parent coordinator.
  Parent coordinators can provide answers to many of your school-related questions and concerns. Call
  or visit your child’s school to get your parent coordinator’s contact information.
